Morning Routines and How They Impact Your Day
Morning routines don't happen overnight. But once they're set, your mental health and wellbeing will benefit tremendously. Whether you're starting your workday at home, heading into the office, or the kiddos need to be tended to, having a morning routine creates a structure that you'll crave every day.
Before I get into my morning routine and things to kick start your morning, I want to chat about why it’s important to establish a daily morning routine.
Morning Routines
Having a morning routine can have multiple benefits like more productivity, feeling confident, and even promoting a positive attitude. (A Very Well Mind)
A morning routine is stress-reducing. Instead of having a hectic and overwhelming morning, that is replaced with a calm, quiet, and productive hour to yourself. Having a morning routine that you like and helps set the tone for the day can help:
The connections you have with your partner, spouse, friends, clients and co-workers
It allows you to take control of your schedule and day rather than the other way around
It increases productivity throughout your day
It can help build your confidence and self-esteem
It can help you find peace for what the day has in store
The best thing about morning routines is that they are custom to you and your lifestyle. Below I'm sharing a list of things that you can incorporate into your morning routine and how to maintain a sustainable one that doesn't go to shit. 🙃
A Look into My Morning Routine
To build a sustainable morning routine that lasts, use these guidelines below that have helped me set a successful routine.
Start with one thing each week and build upon that aka don't go ALL in wanting to accomplish multiple things from the beginning. That will only make you feel anxious, rushed, and drained.
Wake up 30-45 minutes earlier than your current wake up time. OK, I know you're like but Karli I love my sleep. Try to go to bed 30-45 minutes earlier the night before. Again, this will take some time and effort to get used to.
Don't scroll social media or check your email for the first hour that you're awake. Getting out of that habit will give you more time in the morning for yourself and will leave you feeling refreshed and less stressed.
Move your body for at least 20 minutes. This can look very different from person to person, so do what feels right for you. This can also change every day depending on how you're feeling or what your workout regime looks like.
Setting your intention for the day. Mornings set the tone and mood for the day, so set yourself up for success by trying one or all of these: journaling, writing down three things you're grateful for, create your work to-do list and keeping that under 5 tasks for the day.
A List of Ideas to Get You Started
Moving your body (going for a walk, working out, yoga, etc.)
Meditating for 10 minutes
Drinking a glass of water before your morning coffee
Practicing gratitude or journaling
Skincare routine
Not scrolling social media for the first hour you're awake
Getting dressed/ ready for the day
Reading 10-15 minutes of a personal development book
Eating a healthy and nutritional breakfast
Making your bed
Remember to incorporate things that bring you happiness, joy, calmness, etc. to start you day off on the right foot! Cheers to kickstarting your morning routine and having something to look forward to every day.
