Building a brand isn’t easy. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes such as creating a brand strategy, who you’re going to offer your services to, designing your brand identity and website, and how you’re going to market to your dream clients.

Along with the essentials I’ve just mentioned above, there is one tip that stands out as the most important for attracting your dream clients: authenticity.

This is the magic ingredient.

Authenticity is one of the most important elements in your branding because it sets your brand apart and draws in your dream clients.

Having an authentic brand is all about being real, genuine, and honest in your communications, messaging, and how your brand interacts with anyone that encounters it.

Let’s break down why authenticity matters for your small business.

Why it matters

Authenticity in your branding matters because it builds trust. Think about your marketing efforts, what you’re saying across your website, and how your Instagram posts or TikToks are being relayed.

When your brand reflects your values, mission and promises, you’re creating a sense of trust with your dream clients — and that’s exactly what consumers crave.

Secondly, when your brand is authentic it can connect on a deeper, emotional level with your audience. Make it easy for your audience to see themselves in your brand because it makes your brand relatable and builds that emotional connection.

Try adding in relatable brand messaging and facts about yourself that you can see your dream clients seeing themselves too.

And the last one is simply standing out. Your business probably offers similar or the same services from your competitors — but it’s your perspective, point of view, and uniqueness that will allow you to stand out.

How to embrace authenticity in your branding

  1. Define your brand values. Start with creating a list of values that you believe in personally and how it’s going to shape your business.

  2. Tell your story. Share your brand’s story through the ups and downs, your challenges as a small business owner, and things you’ve excelled in. People want to connect with people, and your story will help you connect with your dream clients through being authentic.

  3. Consistency is key. Everything you put out there as a brand needs to be consistent. From your branding elements (logos, colors, fonts, etc.) and messaging needs to carry a consistency across all of your platforms and touchpoints.

  4. Be transparent. As a small business, you want to put everything out there so there isn’t any confusion with your audience. List your pricing on your website, being up front about timelines and expectations, and just being honest will build a better relationship with your dream client.

  5. Listen and engage with your audience. This can be as easy as addressing their questions in your Instagram stories or a blog post, and inviting feedback from them that you can act on. Your willingness to show up and listen to them demonstrates true authenticity.
